Profiling the Injuries Sustained by Police Trainees Undergoing Initial Training: A Retrospective Cohort Study

The tasks performed by police officers are unique, varied and can be in unexpected situations. Initial college training is used to prepare new conduct these known a time when trainees at an elevated risk of injury. aim this study was profile injuries occurring within national Police Force during initial inform injury prevention strategies. Using retrospective cohort design, point-of-care data including body site, nature, mechanism, the activity being were provided. A total 564 recorded over 22-month period, with mean age recruits reporting 28.83 years ± 6.9 years. incidence ranged across periods, from 456.25 3079 per 1000 person-years overall rate 1550.15 person-years. shoulder most injured site (n = 113, 20% injuries), sprains strains common nature 287, 50.9% injuries). Muscular stress physical exercise mechanism 175, 31.0% injuries) responsible for largest proportion “unknown” 256, 45.4% followed 215, 38.1%). Injuries appear typically joint related—commonly shoulder—with primary Prescreening protocols may benefit, efforts should made recruit train physically resilient trainees. Injuries, whether they occurred pre-enlistment or training, fully rehabilitated prior individual’s commencement as qualified officer.
